Summer Sun and Baby Safety
What special concerns should you have about baby safety in the summer sun? Here are a few, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
- Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight
- Choose a sunscreen designed for young children
- Make sure your baby/child drinks plenty of water, as hot days can dehydrate them quickly
- Select clothes made of tightly woven fabrics
- The sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- The sun's damaging UV rays can bounce back from sand, snow or concrete
- Most of the sun's rays can come through the clouds on an overcast day
- Use a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
