Summer Sun and Baby Safety

What special concerns should you have about baby safety in the summer sun? Here are a few, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

  • Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight
  • Choose a sunscreen designed for young children
  • Make sure your baby/child drinks plenty of water, as hot days can dehydrate them quickly
  • Select clothes made of tightly woven fabrics
  • The sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • The sun's damaging UV rays can bounce back from sand, snow or concrete
  • Most of the sun's rays can come through the clouds on an overcast day
  • Use a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
